Open Fit Hearing Aids, More Information
What is an open fit hearing aid?
What's all the BUZZ about the "new" Open Fit Hearing Aids? Open Fit Hearing Aids are named Open-Fit because they leave the ear
canal open. They do not block or occlude the ear canal. There are many
advantages to this design. The
open fit concept is not necessarily new. This design has been around for awhile. The reason it has become popular of late is the advancement in
feedback cancellation technologies.
What's feedback?
Feedback is that annoying whistling of a
hearing aid. Feedback occurs when a sound is amplified and then amplified again and again. Like when someone gets the microphone too close to the speaker at church. The sound system is thrown into a perpetual loop. In a hearing aid the microphone and speaker are only about an inch or two apart. Feedback
happens to a hearing aid when sound is amplified and then the sound
"feeds back" thru the microphone through the vent or if a hearing aid is very powerful and doesn't fit quite right, feedback will also occur. Feedback cancellation systems reduce or eliminate most
feedback.
Natural Sound Quality - Eliminates Hollow Sound
(Open-Fit Air Tip)
Open Fit Hearing Instruments eliminate the "barrel effect" or hollow
sound often associated with custom fit hearing aids. This more comfortable feeling is due to the ear canal being left open using the above pictured Open-Fit Air Tip. This design allows for sound to pass through the natural ear canal and then mixed with the amplified sound from the hearing aid. With our Freestyle Open-Fit Hearing Aids, only the precise sounds at the frequencies that you have trouble hearing will be amplified through the hearing aid. This
mixing of the natural and amplified sound allows for a clearer more natural sounding hearing aid experience.
Cosmetically Pleasing - Virtually Invisible
Most open fit hearing instruments fit neatly behind the ear.
They have a thin transparent tube that fits into the ear canal. The thin sound tube is very hard to see and blends nicely into the line between the ear and the sideburn.
Many clients say "I don't care what it
looks like, I just want to hear"! And I'm sure that is true. But
the vast majority of clients want to look good also.
It doesn't matter how old we are. We never want to
feel older than what we really are. That is probably why this hearing instrument is very popular with the younger crowd. People of all ages
have hearing loss. If more people get help for their hearing because
the hearing aids looks better, that's a good thing.
Here Today.....Hear Tomorrow
Unlike many
traditional hearing aids, Open Fit Hearing Instruments do not require the process of making custom ear molds. There are no
impressions to make. Becasue there is no earmold or impression to make in the lab, many times we are able to ship the hearing aids to you as soon as we program them.
What about reliability?
The worst enemies of any hearing aid are earwax and moisture. When earwax gets inside your hearing aid it can cause problems. The earwax
will block the sound outlet opening of the hearing aid. When the wax is removed, the aid performs normally again. Over time, the earwax and cleaning process takes a toll on hearing aid speaker. This can result in the aid needing a repair from our lab.
Since Open Fit Hearing Aids are behind-the-ear hearing aids, the components of the device are outside the ear and not subject to as much earwax or moisture from the body. Service issues tend to be fewer with behind-the-ear than traditional style in-the-ear hearing aids.
